Nearly 80 years later, division is still the theme of the day.<\/p>\n<p>Traces of unrest are everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>Slogans condemning the far-right Alternative for Germany party (AfD) are plastered on stickers on the rail of a pedestrian bridge and scribbled in chalk on a bike path.<\/p>\n<p>Red paint is splashed over AfD election posters. The message from leftist activists is clear: we don\u2019t want you here.<\/p>\n<p>As voters head to the polls for the Brandenburg state elections, a swelling protest against AfD greeted train users at the Potsdam Hauptbahnhof.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The rallies were organized by the Geradedenke Kollektiv, a coalition of self-described leftist groups.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgainst nazis\u201d, \u201cNo room for the AfD\u201d and \u201cF*ck the AfD\u201d were some of the popular slogans for posters, flags and signs.<\/p>\n<div class=\"l-article__part\" data-shortcode=\"caption\">\n<figure class=\"c-figure c-figure--alignnone c-figure--expandable\">\n<div class=\"c-figure__inner\"><figcaption class=\"c-figure__caption c-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"c-caption__desc\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\tProtesters held back by police officers outside of the AfD headquarters.\t\t\t\t<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"c-caption__cite\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\tGloria Henriquez\/Global News\t\t\t\t<\/cite><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThey are not welcome here,\u201d clearly stated Christian Mast, one of the organizers with Geradedenke Kollektiv, whose tagline is \u201ca pro-science, anti-populism, anti-right wing, anti-conspiracy theories collective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mast says the AfD is a populist party that aims to deny the rights of Germans and rewind the clock on years of progressive policies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe AfD is presenting an image or an idea of a society that is coming straight from 50, 60 years ago. They stand for values like traditional marriages, that there are only two genders and denying the whole existence of queer people,\u201d Mast explained.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While that idea of society doesn\u2019t sit well with Mast and those protesting, one in five Germans sympathize with the AfD and its policies, according to the Pew Research centre, a nonpartisan American think tank based in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p>Historian and journalist Katja Hoyer explains the AfD\u2019s appeal in part because it\u2019s filling a political void.<\/p>\n<p>Hoyer is the author of Beyond the Wall, a history book about life in socialist East Germany, where she grew up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnder Angela Merkel the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) moved so far into the middle, maybe even centre-left that it left a huge vacuum on the right hand side of the political spectrum and so, if people had concerns or were sort of conservative on the social sense, they often felt like they had nowhere to go with that,\u201d Hoyer explained.<\/p>\n<div class=\"l-article__part\" data-shortcode=\"caption\">\n<figure class=\"c-figure c-figure--alignnone c-figure--expandable\">\n<div class=\"c-figure__inner\"><figcaption class=\"c-figure__caption c-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"c-caption__desc\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\tThe AfD headquarters on the day of the Brandenburg state election on Sunday Sept. 22, 2024.\t\t\t\t<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"c-caption__cite\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\tGloria Henriquez\/Global News\t\t\t\t<\/cite><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Hoyer adds many Germans also resented Merkel\u2019s open border migration policy that welcomed over 1 million refugees fleeing Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan in 2015.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe will manage this,\u201d Merkel famously proclaimed at the time.<\/p>\n<p>AfD supporters such as Corinna Carriere think the country in fact, didn\u2019t manage the refugee crisis appropriately and Germans like her are now paying for it.<\/p>\n<p>Born and raised near Stuttgart, Carriere is the daughter of Italian immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey came to (Germany) to work,\u201d she said. \u201cWe have a lot of immigrants who come here for the money and they don\u2019t want to work anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-tabs\">\n<p>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" class=\"c-tabs__tab c-tabs__tab--active\" type=\"button\">More on World<\/button><br \/>\n\t\t\t<button role=\"tab\" class=\"c-tabs__tab\" type=\"button\">More videos<\/button>\n\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Germany\u2019s unemployment rate was six per cent for September 2024, according to the country\u2019s statistics office.<\/p>\n<p>Carriere is self-employed. She is a tattoo artist and ran for the AfD as a city councillor in Potsdam.<\/p>\n<p>She says she got involved to preserve the Germany she grew up in for her two teenage daughters. She feels like the left doesn\u2019t allow for other opinions in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGermany is like the Titanic. And with the current parties, we will sink. We need a change and we have only the AfD for this change,\u201d Carriere said.<\/p>\n<p>Part of the AfD\u2019s party platform as outlined in their manifesto, includes promoting \u201cGerman as Predominant Culture instead of Multiculturalism.\u201d This includes a clause on Islam \u201cnot belonging to Germany.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIts expansion and the ever-increasing number of Muslims in the country are viewed by the AfD as a danger to our state, our society, and our values,\u201d reads part of the AfD manifesto.<\/p>\n<div class=\"l-article__part\" data-shortcode=\"caption\">\n<figure class=\"c-figure c-figure--alignnone c-figure--expandable\">\n<div class=\"c-figure__inner\"><figcaption class=\"c-figure__caption c-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"c-caption__desc\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\tA photographer takes a shot of vandalized campaign posters in the German city of Potsdam on the day of the Brandenburg state election day on Sept. 22, 2024.\t\t\t\t<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"c-caption__cite\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\tGloria Henriquez\/Global News\t\t\t\t<\/cite><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>According to Germany\u2019s Federal Ministry of the Interior, a study\u00a0conducted in 2020 shows that roughly 4.5 million Muslims live in Germany, accounting for about 5.5 per cent of the population.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup\" data-newsletter-inline=\"\">\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup__image\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/wp-content\/themes\/shaw-globalnews\/images\/skyline\/national.jpg\" alt=\"Get the day's top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.\"\/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n<div class=\"c-inlineSignup__content\">\n<h3>Get daily National news<\/h3>\n<p>Get the day&#8217;s top news, political, economic, and current affairs headlines, delivered to your inbox once a day.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The manifesto also calls for massive \u201crepatriation\u201d of immigrants, a stop to the use of gender-neutral terminology and it opposes abortion \u201cas a human right,\u201d among other things.<\/p>\n<p>While Carriere deems those policies necessary to preserve her idea of Germany, Mast believes they threaten the very foundation of the country that he knows and loves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEspecially taking into consideration German history, it\u2019s a super big achievement \u2014 there is still a way to go in many parts \u2014 but that kind of society actually brings a lot of good things and nice ways to live your life in freedom\u2026 that is something we for sure want to keep and the AfD works against,\u201d Mast said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Because of Germany\u2019s history with Nazism, Mast says they\u2019ve seen how far things can go.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why they are more sensitive and react more vehemently against the AfD\u2019s policies, which they consider fascist, he said.<\/p>\n<p>To make their voices heard by the AfD, the Kollektiv traveled to the party\u2019s headquarters, located a 20-minute bus ride outside of the city centre.<\/p>\n<p>Global News was on a bus as it was stopped and inspected by police officers before it entered the road where party supporters were located. Officers asked people why they were heading into the area.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s where Mast and Carriere met: divided not only by their views but by barricades and dozens of police officers.<\/p>\n<p>Carriere was standing just outside the venue, watching the throng of opponents lead by Mast yell in protest of her party\u2019s presence. She disagrees with their tactics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to talk with everybody,\u201d she said. \u201cBut they don\u2019t want to talk with us. Why?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She listened to them chant and wave a flag that read \u201cagainst Nazis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s so stupid,\u201d she said. \u201cWhat is happening here in Germany is really what happened in this time (Nazism) but not from the AfD but the other parties. They try to shut other peoples\u2019 mouths who have a different opinion.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Voters outside of polling stations who Global News spoke to argue AfD supporters\u2019 opinions can be damaging to society.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s why many came out to protest against the party by casting a ballot, including Evelyn Reimer, the daughter of Russian immigrants.<\/p>\n<p>She sees the AfD\u2019s immigration policy as problematic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just see the danger in the refugee topic. They try to build up more hate against people who are not from Germany,\u201d Reimer said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really happy that my family came here and I also have friends who come from Syria. But other young people do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can easily see who actually has knowledge about politics and who is just spreading hate,\u201d Probst said.<\/p>\n<p>Jakob Franke, a doctor in medicine in Potsdam said this election was important for him to combat the rise of the party. He doesn\u2019t want Germany to be associated with a far-right party ever again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s an image that we can\u2019t go back to, historically speaking,\u201d Franke said.<\/p>\n<p>According to final results published by the state electoral administration, the AfD came a close second with 29.2 per cent of the vote. The party in power, the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), managed to narrowly clinch another term, capturing 30.9 per cent of the votes.<\/p>\n<p>Tension was high among SPD supporters because the AfD had previously earned a victory in the Thuringia state elections. It was the far right\u2019s first win in a state parliament election. But when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, he says he enrolled as a member. He was vice-chairman for the AfD\u2019s youth wing in the West-German state of Hesse.<\/p>\n<p>Now 27 years old, he is practicing to become a roof plumber.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was not acceptable how the government imposed sanctions on those who would not vaccinate themselves, like myself,\u201d Asch said. \u201cThat\u2019s why there was only one option, to join the AfD.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWokeness is taking place in our everyday lives, especially the parties on the left side are encouraging it.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"l-article__part\" data-shortcode=\"caption\">\n<figure class=\"c-figure c-figure--alignnone c-figure--expandable\">\n<div class=\"c-figure__inner\"><figcaption class=\"c-figure__caption c-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"c-caption__desc\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\tAfD c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe governing parties can\u2019t understand the small man who has to face prices becoming higher and fearing to lose their status in their society,\u201d Asch said, as other members of the youth wing were singing outside.<\/p>\n<p>The lyrics of the song that was belted out: \u201cHey, now it\u2019s happening, deport them all!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One person held a sign that read \u201cdeport millions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Germany\u2019s Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) \u2014 the government\u2019s domestic intelligence service \u2014 classified the AfD\u2019s youth wing as a \u201cconfirmed extremist threat,\u201d according to the service.<\/p>\n<p>The group disputed the classification in court but lost, upholding the office\u2019s right to continue labeling the organization as extremist and monitor its activities, as reported by Reuters back in May.<\/p>\n<p>Asch\u2019s name was also mentioned in an investigative piece by Germany\u2019s Der Spiegel magazine about a secret meeting organized by the AfD\u2019s youth wing allegedly attended by a former neo-nazi, according to the article.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about it, Asch brushed it off.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe intentions we have for Germany are not to abolish democracy, but get democracy back into people\u2019s lives, to actively take everyone in in making decisions democracy stands for,\u201d Asch said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"l-article__part\" data-shortcode=\"caption\">\n<figure class=\"c-figure c-figure--alignnone c-figure--expandable\">\n<div class=\"c-figure__inner\"><figcaption class=\"c-figure__caption c-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"c-caption__desc\"><br up the wrong tree.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe are in no way the enemy of society, of the country, of the state,\u201d Asch said.<\/p>\n<p>He says people who are voting for the AfD are people who have felt abandoned by other political parties and are saying \u201cenough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hoyer says that the CDU is trying to win back votes the AfD took by clawing back the centre-right position, but people in the East, where the AfD is strongest, are wary, she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey feel \u2018I don\u2019t really know what I\u2019m getting with the CDU whilst if I vote for the AfD the message is very, very clear with what I want and what will happen\u2019,\u201d Hoyer said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople think there\u2019s a centre-left, left-green consensus amongst politicians and people that are the CEOs of large companies and stakeholders in society\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>For example, Edeka, a large grocery chain, published a full page advertisement on several newspapers ahead of the Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg state elections, saying why \u201cBlue is not an option at Edeka\u201d, making allusion to AfD\u2019s blue party colour.<\/p>\n<p>It later apologized.<\/p>\n<p>The AfD has faced opposition since its inception, even when it originally leaned neo-liberal and was created to oppose currency union within the European Union, Hoyer says.<\/p>\n<div class=\"c-ad c-ad--bigbox l-article__ad\">\n<p>Story continues below that label and they already feel ostracized and not heard and it becomes almost like a gleeful thing to play with that and to provoke with that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The AfD\u2019s stronghold is not exclusive to the East. Having a bit more social and economic diversity would help,\u201d Hoyer said.<\/p>\n<p>It starts with leaders people can believe in, Hoyer states.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople don\u2019t want demagogues or people shouting platitudes at them, they want pragmatic leaders who look like they care about their job,\u201d Hoyer added.<\/p>\n<p>This was perhaps the statement made by voters in Potsdam on election day that sunny Sunday, who gave the SPD\u2019s Dietmar Woidke another term, after 11 years in power.<\/p>\n<p>Hoyer says people in the state of Brandenburg like him because he listens.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s clear that with a narrow win against the AfD, not everybody feels heard.<\/p>\n<p><em>Gloria Henriquez is in Germany as part of the <\/em><strong><em>Arthur F.
